Description
I’m selling a unique, handmade vintage touring wheelset. The set is signed “Clayton by Adam Peitsch”. Adam Peitsch, it turns out, was a disciple of the renowned British-American builder Colin Laing. Apparently, Laing taught Peitsch framebuilding, then handed off the business to him for a period, along with the right to use the name “Colin Laing” (all this info is from friends of Laing over at BikeForums).
You can tell that the frame is well made and that the builder was aiming high. The nice lugs and fancy braze-ons speak for themselves. There is no headbadge and the paint-job is a nice red, with the expected amount of minor blemishes for a frame this old.
The geometry shows the British influence of Laing, with a long top tube (55cm) and compact seat tube (51cm). Also the presence of rear (but not front) rack mounts is a giveaway of the inspiration from north of the Channel.
I believe we’re talking about late 70s-early 80s, but I could be off by a bit.
I bought this frame recently hoping to use it myself, but I’ve never built it up. This needs a new home, and a good one, because it’s a unique frame.
The clearances are generous, British style. The last two pictures show you the fit with 700x23mm tires. You can easily go up to 28mm with fenders, maybe 32mm, or you can definitely do 32mm, maybe even 35mm, without fenders.
Moreover, this would make a sweet 650b conversion. I’ve tried with my 650 set in, and I can confirm that you can reach the rims with Dia Compe’s long reach (DC750) centerpulls. I believe you can even fit 650x42mm tires.
