The late 1920s and early 1930s had some snazzy classics!
Puttin' On the Ritz was written by Irving Berlin in 1927, and it was introduced in 1930 by Harry Richman and chorus in the musical film Puttin' On the Ritz. According to The Complete Lyrics of Irving Berlin, this was the first song in film to be sung by an interracial ensemble. The song is often associated with Fred Astaire. The song regained popularity in 1983 when Taco, a Dutch musician, created a new version of the song and it was released on MTV.
Happy Days Are Here Again was written in 1929, with music by Milton Ager and lyrics by Jack Yellen. This song has been used many times through the years. Many remember it as it was used in Franklin D. Roosevelt's successful 1932 presidential campaign. It was also covered by Barbra Streisand in 1962, who went on to sing the song opposite Judy Garland, who sang Get Happy. In 1986, the song received an ASCAP Award for 'Most Performed Feature Film Standards on TV'.
The Stein Song (University of Maine), is the school song of the University of Maine. It was written in 1902 and was popularized in 1930 by Rudy Vallée. It is the only college song to become a number one hit.
