This 3 dollars note printed by American Bank Note Company for American Numismatic Association Colorado Springs Colorado 89th Anniversary Convention/August 18-23 1980 Cincinnati Ohio. Copyright 1980 by American Numismatic Association.
The Third National Bank receives Charter Number 20 under the National Bank Act in 1863, and sets up business on Third and Walnut Streets. In 1871, Third National Bank acquires The Bank of the Ohio Valley. By 1882, Third National’s capital is million and is considered the largest bank capital in the state of Ohio. Queen City National Bank changes its name to Fifth National Bank in 1888. Union Savings Bank and Trust Company, organizes in 1890, and is also part of Fifth Third Bank’s family tree, led by Jacob G. Schmidlapp, a name that remains prominent in Cincinnati history and Fifth Third’s philanthropic efforts.
The Bank of the Ohio Valley, organized under the Ohio free banking law 1851, began business in Cincinnati in September 1858 with ,000 paid in its initial ,000 capital stock. From the start it was very successful due to good management and adherence to sound financial principles. Its capital stock was soon increased to &500,000 and it paid annual dividends of 10%. It issued circulating notes in denominations of , , and , the note being very similar to the note reproduced from original plates. A statement of May 6, 1862, showed ,498 of its notes in circulation.
Intaglio impressions—such as this current note—are printed from the same plates and inks on the same presses directly into card-stock after release. In many cases, the intaglio impressions were created long after the release of the design.
Intaglio impressions are printed on one side only (uniface) without identifying serial numbers.
