Description
Up for bid is a Rare survivor of the birth of BMX. I've heard this frame referenced as the "Holy Grail" of collectable frames.I was presented this frame on my 11th Birthday (1976). At the time, a family member owned a photography studio in San Leandro, CA and was hired to do a photo shoot for publications by (I'm assuming Doug Schwerma). The photos were picked up and the frame left behind as collateral. Months later it was determined the frame was abandoned (Doug Schwerma's death?). I became the owner and the envy of my neighborhood friends. Yes, the frame in the advertisements for Champion is in fact Serial #CF009. Apparently less than 300 of these frames were built but they became legendary for their strength, build quality and aesthetics.
Considering the age of this frame, it's in VERY good condition. No dents, bends or breaks. (No repairs) and no drilling for caliper brakes. The nickel plating has held up well but is not perfect. Pictures reveal some pitting, light scratches and wear marks. Welds are corrosion free and "works of art". Redline Forks were purchased with extra long steer tube and installed in 1976 at the time of build. Nickel plating is good but has chipped away slightly at the drop outs. Again, no dents, bends or repairs. Bottom bracket and head tube have the original bearing cups installed (no hardware).
I have applied some Semichrome Polish to bring out the unique appearance that nickel provides. More effort should provide an even better result (with decals removed).
This auction includes the frame, forks and a set of replacement decals. Please view photos carefully and ask questions. I have more photos available upon request.
